As the carbon-13 labelled analogue of 2,4,5,6-tetrachlorophenol, 2,4,5,6-Tetrachlorophenol-13C6 carries six enriched carbon atoms within the aromatic ring, giving a formula of [13C]6H2Cl4O and a molecular weight of 237.85. Chlorophenols of this type arise from wood preservation, industrial processing and chlorination, and are routinely determined in water, soil and sediment monitoring programmes. Because the labelled compound behaves almost identically to the native analyte during extraction and chromatography while remaining distinguishable by mass, it is normally employed as an internal standard for isotope-dilution quantification, and it also supports method development and recovery checks.
