Surfactin is a cyclic lipopeptide biosurfactant produced by Bacillus species, built from a heptapeptide ring closed by a beta-hydroxy fatty acid. Its molecular weight of 1036.34 and formula C53H93N7O13 reflect this amphiphilic architecture, which lowers surface tension and gives the molecule detergent-like behaviour. Because surfactin is encountered in fermentation-derived products, food-contact applications and veterinary residue studies, laboratories keep a defined reference material on hand for method development and validation, for identity confirmation by chromatographic and mass spectrometric comparison, and for quantitative calibration when measuring fermentation yields or residues.
