Aflatoxin M1 belongs to the hydroxylated group of aflatoxin metabolites and is the form most often monitored in milk and dairy products, where it appears after lactating animals consume feed contaminated with aflatoxin B1. As a reference standard it allows laboratories to identify and measure this mycotoxin against a characterised material rather than an unverified in-house preparation. Typical uses cover LC-MS/MS method development and validation, recovery and matrix-effect studies, calibration curve construction and confirmation of peak identity in suspect samples, particularly in residue monitoring and food safety testing where low-level detection is required. The material is a white to off-white solid with the molecular formula C17H12O7 and a molecular weight of 328.27.
