The principal photosynthetic pigment of plants and algae, Chlorophyll A, is measured in food, agricultural and environmental laboratories for pigment profiling and for assessing plant or algal material. It is a magnesium-containing chlorin of formula C55H72N4O5 Mg and molecular weight 869.18, presented as a green to black semi-solid to solid. Because the pigment is sensitive to light and heat, working solutions are normally prepared fresh and handled under subdued light. Typical uses include peak identification in HPLC or LC-MS pigment separations, response checks for photodiode-array detection, and calibration of quantitative assays.
